January 17, 2010

Gathering in Christ's name

Pre-service music
Call to Worship Isaiah 58:6-7,10
Leader: Is not this the fast that I choose? . . .
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
And bring the homeless poor into your house?
If you give your food to the hungry
And satisfy the needs of the afflicted,
Then your light shall rise in the darkness
And your gloom be like the noonday.

Women: Christ's food in our souls
Men: Our food shared like his.
Women: Christ's life in our hands,
Men: Our lives shaped by his.
Women: Christ's love in our hearts,
Men: Our love warmed through his.
All: Christ's peace on our path,
Our path following his

In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul is writing to an unruly and headstrong church, which, according to the first chapter, seems to be splitting into at least four different factions. Chapters 11-14 are instructions for proper attitudes and behavior during worship, which begins with a supper-an evening "agape meal"-and continues with the exercise of many spiritual gifts. Our text for today deals with appropriate behavior at the meal itself.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

17Now in the following instructions I do not commend you. because when you come together, it is not for the better but for the worse!

18To begin with, when you come together as a gathered church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and to some extent, I believe it. 20For when you come together-together in one place-it is not really to eat a supper of the Lord. 21For when it comes to the meal, some eat their own suppers first; and one goes hungry and another is drunk.

22What? Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you show contempt for the gathered church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? In this matter I do not commend you!

23For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you-that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this to remember me." 25In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink, to remember me." 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

27Whoever, therefore, eats the bread and drinks the cup in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. 28Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves.

30For this reason, some of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 33So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34If any are hungry, let them eat in the house-church, so that when you come together, it will not be for your condemnation.

12:12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Prayers and Praises

Mennonite Mission Network: Pray that radio listeners and Web site visitors who find Third Way Media's Shaping Families program may find insight for the challenges they face in their own lives.

VMM Missions: Today a medical mission team led by Dr. Dennis Hatter is worshipping in Haiti, where they are meeting medical needs of persons who have minimal health care the rest of the year. Ask God to give them strength and wisdom each day as they treat hundreds of sick people in this island country.

Pray for the local services for people in need: Love Inc., Shelter for Help in Emergency, Food Bank, Salvation Army, IMPACT--a justice ministry and PACEM-- the initiative for the homeless.
