IMPACT Update for Congregations
April 23, 2007

This past March IMPACT had a very successful Nehemiah Action, with over 1600 people attending and several significant victories for justice have resulted. Regarding Public transportation, we won Sunday bus service with service every 30 minutes and a new route out 5th Street Extended to the County Office Building and Southwood neighborhood. Albemarle County allocated an additional 250K to expand public transportation in a very tight budget season. The specifics of how it will be spent will be decided in May. Our final request, night service on route 5 is a strong possibility for use of these monies. Regarding affordable housing, we asked the City to expand their housing proposal from 1 million to 1.42 million local dollars a year, and they decided to allocate 1.75 million dollars a year in their budget for at least the next 5 years, which is a total investment of 8.75 million! We are currently following up with public officials for the joint City-County plan to create at least 150 additional housing units for those earning under 20K a year.

During May and June IMPACT will focus on our annual support drive to work towards financial sustainability. Teams in congregations will be seeking financial investments from individuals. Your returns are significant wins for justice, the opportunity to live out your faith in a concrete way, to build relationships with other people of faith, and a way to be part of the decisions that happen in the community! The primary items of the IMPACT budget are office expenses, the organizer's salary, training costs, and consulting from the DART network. There will be an IMPACT Support Drive Celebration on May 17 at 7pm at First Presbyterian Church. We invite you to attend! During these months, there will also be a corporate support drive seeking investments from the local business community.

Thank you for your involvement over the last year and being part of God's call to justice!

Prayers and Praises

VMBM: On Saturday, the Waltman family will leave the Maranatha School for the Deaf in Jamaica and go back home to Pa. Their enthusiasm and energy for the students and the projects around the school will be deeply missed. Than k God for their three months of service.

Mennonite Mission Network: Mennonite Mission Network workers David and Starla Moyer, Argentina, are coordinating a Saturday afternoon program called Hora Feliz (Happy Hour) for children ages four to eleven at Centro Cristiano, the church's community center. Pray the through Bible stories and other activities, God's love will touch the hearts of these children.

Pray for the local services for people in need: Love Inc., Shelter for Help in Emergency, Food Bank, Salvation Army, IMPACT--a justice ministry and PACEM-- the initiative for the homeless.
