August 13, 2006 - Acts of Hope !

Gathering in Christ's name

Call to Worship
Leader: What is this place, where we are meeting?
People: Only a house, the earth its floor.
Walls and a roof, sheltering people,
windows for light, an open door.
Leader: Yet it becomes a body that lives
when we are gathered here, and know our God is near.

People: We in this place remember and speak again
what we have heard: God's free redeeming word.
This is the place where we can receive
what we need to increase: our justice and God's peace.

Announcements

Join us for some fellowship and fresh air at the Back to School Picnic, August 20th, at Pen Park. That's right...we are breaking tradition this year and moving the picnic to the city. Bring your favorite picnic dish to share and any favorite outdoor games. Drinks and dinnerware provided. Please contact Charis with any questions.

Ben Nissley will be leaving this coming week for California where he will be starting an internship with Mission Focus. He will leave in December for a mission trip with the same organization. The vision for the trip is as follows: We will be going to 4-6 different countries around the world making documentary films about how God is working in the area. We will then bring these films back to distribute to churches across America, both to encourage and to raise awareness. Countries we will be visiting include India, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia."
Fall Potlucks: All are invited to join in these informal gatherings to get to know the people of Charlottesville Mennonite Church other than Sunday morning. We are currently looking for people to sign up to host gatherings of 6-10 people sometime between September 22 and October 8. Everyone brings a dish.
Join Habitat for Humanity and the project design team on August 19 from 10am-12pm at Clark Elementary School to share your thoughts about the Sunrise Trailer Park, a new mixed-income, mixed-use community located off Carlton Street.

Please have all bulletin information to Maren by noon on Thursday. Jeannine will be out of town Aug. 2-16. Please send announcements to Maren during that time. Thanks!

Prayers and Praises

VMBM: The work team from Mountain View Mennonite Church (Hickory, N.C.) inspired the Diego Martin Mennonite Church in Trinidad to set this goal: form teams from their congregation to reach out and help needy people in their own church and community. Praise God for the blessings that flowed both ways!

Mennonite Mission Network: Pray for the new Mennonite Voluntary Service participants attending orientation August 14-18 at Amigo Centre in Michigan. Volunteers will work with congregations in service to their communities to bring the love of Christ to a broken and hurting world.

Pray for the local services for people in need: Love Inc., Shelter for Help in Emergency, Food Bank, Salvation Army, IMPACT--a justice ministry and PACEM-- the initiative for the homeless.
